A Message From our Executive Director
When I was fourteen, my family and I moved to Maryland from Florida and I began my eighth-grade year with no friends, no idea where my school hallways would lead me, and innumerable questions about what my year would look like. Through my father’s work, I was invited to an event with Camp Sonshine. I remember being so nervous about attending that event and wondering whether or not I would make friends or enjoy any part of it.
Thankfully, the Camp Sonshine staff that evening made me feel welcomed and got to know me right from my first step into the room. That evening lifelong friendships would form, I would find hope for my new home, and I would also find some of the most loving and supportive people I would ever be around. Fast forward 20 years and it has been my extreme pleasure to now lead Camp Sonshine as the Executive Director and help children make positive memories that will last a lifetime, just as what was done for me so many years ago.
Camp Sonshine is driven by our desire to create memories for children and youth that will provide them a foundation for life circumstances that are most certainly going to come. We serve because it’s the right thing to do and not for what we get out of it. Whether we are in the US or in another country, whether it’s during our after-school programs or during the summer, we want to be right next to people encouraging, supporting, and doing whatever we can to help. Over the coming year, Camp will be inviting our families to come and join us as we seek to continue to serve our community. We will be hosting community service events where we hope you bring your entire family as we engage in helping our community in a tangible way. Whether it’s a community clean-up day, a soup kitchen, or other acts of service we hope to partner with you and others in our community to bring love and hope.
I also want to invite you to the launch of Saturday Night Light, a weekly service where we’ll engage in conversations about faith, family and everything in between. We believe that life goes as well as our relationships and we want to provide a space and time to connect with you and your family in a deeper way. We would love for you to join us on February 8th at 5 pm for snacks, live music, an encouraging message, and truly an opportunity to connect deeper with your friends, family, and community. We believe that there are guiding values to life that are helpful throughout all stages and we all need to be reminded of. We hope to create an environment of love where life’s questions can be discussed and a true community can be found.
