Camp Sonshine offers an opportunity designed for students completing grades 10th-12th.
The Assistant Counselor role is intended to offer you the chance to delve into the essence of being a camp counselor. This position serves as a bridge between camper and counselor. You are provided with hands-on learning opportunities and mentorship from experienced staff members. During the summer, you’ll develop leadership skills and forge camper relationships. Furthermore, it’s not just a role but a transformative journey that prepares you for future leadership while positively impacting others.

Assistant Counselors play a diverse role at Camp Sonshine.
They wear many different hats throughout the summer.
They are essential to the smooth operation of camp. Assistant Counselors support Group Counselors in daily activities while also taking charge of specific activity areas. Furthermore, they work diligently to ensure a fun experience for all campers. Whether working behind the scenes or taking center stage, AC’s are indispensable to camp’s success.

Assistant Counselor Experience
Assistant Counselor Experience
In addition to fostering fun and making a positive impact on children’s lives, this program also provides guidance for AC’s personal growth. It equips them with the ability to serve others and cultivate lasting memories and relationships.
Responsiblities
- Assist group or activities counselors.
- Take kids to the bathroom, nurse, etc…
- Handle up to 5 campers by themselves.
- Help come up with or lead activities and devotionals.
- Run games with campers
- Aid staff members with rainy day tasks.

A typical summer camp day schedule varies based on camper program, age group, and gender. Additionally, Assistant Counselors can participate in meetings and other developmental opportunities during the summer.
Serving as an AC means…
- Regular Hours are from 7:45 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.,
- Morning and evening meetings with camp staff and other AC’s
- AC Hangouts!
- Every Wednesday we have an opportunity for the AC’s to get to know each other and their counselors better.
- Participate in games
- Enjoy dinner
- Attend Refuel: a time of worship as well as a small devotional with all camp staff.

When will I know where I'll be working during the summer?
We will let all our AC’s know their placement when they arrive to camp. They will be placed with a group or an activity area to assist.
What is the hiring process?

How do I get compensated?
This position offers both paid and volunteer opportunities. Each Assistant Counselor (AC) is required to commit to a minimum of 4 weeks of work during the summer.
