As the fall season is slowly turning into winter, take advantage of the cool weather, changing leaves and holiday spirit by leading your young child in a few of the following fall-themed activities below! If you so choose, you can also use these activities to connect with your child on some Christ-filled core truths. Check out the “Spiritual Application” portion for a discussion prompt!
Leaf Rubbing – What you’ll need: fallen leaves, crayons and white paper.
-
-
Have your child head outdoors and find several differently shaped fallen leaves! After they’re satisfied with their choices, have them lay the paper on top of the leaves (leaves bottom-side up) and use their favorite colored crayons to rub over the entirety of the leaf. This will leave fun-colored leaf-shape patterns!
-
Spiritual Application – Discuss with your child the intricacies of each leaf and how God created each one differently with care, just like He created your child!
-
Thankful Turkeys – What you’ll need: crayons/markers, pieces of variously colored construction paper, scissors, glue stick.
-
-
Either you or your child (depending on age and ability) cut a medium sized circle from brown construction paper for the body of the turkey, as well as long oval-shaped pieces from various colored construction paper for the feathers. About 5-8 feathers should suffice! You or your child (depending on age and ability) can write one thing they are thankful for on each feather. After that’s completed, glue each feather on one-half of the body of the turkey and create a cute turkey-face using a crayon or maker!
-
Spiritual Application – Discuss with your child where all the good gifts in their life come from and how having an attitude of gratitude is always best!
-
Leaf Mural – What you’ll need: fallen leaves, glue, construction paper.
-
-
Have your child head outdoors and collect as many beautiful, fallen leaves as they desire. After they’ve finished, have them arrange the leaves into a mural and glue to a sheet of construction paper.
-
Spiritual Application – Discuss with your child the beauty of their mural being in the different sizes, shapes and colors of the leaves. Just like that mural, what makes people beautiful is the different ways in which God has created them! Each person is unique and special, and when we all come together, we make a beautiful mural.
